January 9th, 2008

Gibson has been running a series of articles over at their lifestyle section on how to record from home your guitar. The series takes you through how to get studio quality, this is a quick overview you can go an read the full articles here
They start of with Microphone placement, putting the mic in the right place, using the rule of thumb as ” there are no rules ” only waht sounds best.
The type of microphone you should be looking to use is either a dynamic, ribbon or condenser, Dynamics are like shre Sm57 or Beyer M201 which lets you place them nice a close to the cloth of the amp yet without touching it. Ribbon mics you will need to be a little careful with they arent good with high sound levels. and they cost a lot. You need them a foot or so away. Condenser mics are sensitive and you have to put them even further away or use as a second mic to blend in the sound of the close mic. They can distort easy though.
When your trying to guage sound switch to input monitor and listen through monitors or good headphones not cheapies, in a different room if you can
With condenser mics get it a few feet away from the amp. Tip recording using these, is to use your own ear like a mic and stick the mic at the position in the room where the guitar tone sounds the best to you. Have a friend play the guitar and over one ear and walk around the room. When you have a sound you like capture from there set the mic there.
Part two goes into Ambient micing, front and back, multi miking check it out
